Belly Dance, in fact a misnomer as every part of the body is involved in the dance, is a Western-coined name for the traditional Middle East dance, especially Raqs Sharqi. It is also called Arabic Dance in the West, or by the Greco-Turkish term çiftetelli. Raqs Sharqi is more familiar to the Westerners, as it is performed in restaurants and cabarets around the world. Though usually performed by female dancers, it is also sometimes danced by men. Raqs Sharqi is a solo improvisational dance although performed as choreographed dances in a group, sometimes.
